Ans: An invitation can be sent via email, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites on the internet.

 

Q2. Many times, the school authorities have to communicate with your parents. How is it done in your school? How are written communications sent?
Ans: In my school, written communications are sent through notices, SMS, Telephone, invitation cards, web pages, newsletters, quarterly report card comments, and via school staff such as the peon or an attendant.

 

Q3. With your teachers’ help, get two or three specimens of the notices/announcements put up on the school notice board.

Ans: Students should do this on their own.

1. This passage contains four different types of invitations. They are :

A : A formal invitation 

B : A notice 

C : An oral invitation

D : Another oral invitation

 

Read each invitation carefully, keeping in mind the list of eight questions given below. Note the answers in your notebook. Verify that the formal invitation ‘A’ covers all the eight points.

(1) Who is sending/ giving the information?

(2) What is the programme?

Ans: The programme is for the inauguration of a project.

 

(3) What is the name of the project?

Ans: The name of the project is ‘Seeing Eyes, Helping Hands’.

 

(4) Who will inaugurate it?

Ans: Smt. Vimala Naik, former Principal of New Vision High School and President, Sahayak Samaj will inaugurate it.

 

(5) Who will preside over the function?

Ans: Dr. A. M. Chaudhary. Dean, New Life Medical College and Hospital will preside over the function.

 

(6) What time will the function start?

Ans: The function will start at 10 a.m.

 

(7) Where will it take place?

Ans: It will take place in the Assembly Hall, New Vision High School, Off Main Street, Girgaon.

 

(8) How many names get mentioned in the invitation?

Ans: 6 names are mentioned in the invitation.

Now see which of these eight points are covered in the other invitations ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’. Put tick marks against the points that are covered.

2. Prepare a formal invitation for a function you have arranged at home. It should clearly state the following points:

(i) Who is inviting people to the function.
(ii) What the programme is.
(iii) The date and time.
(iv) The venue. (The place where the function will take place.)
(v) A polite request to attend the function.

3. Write an imaginary telephone conversation in which you invite your friend to the above function.

Ans: 

Sonali : Hello. Vicky.

Vicky : Hello. Sonali.

Sonali : I have called to invite you for my birthday party.

Vicky : Oh, thanks. When is it?

Sonali : It’s on the twelfth of this month. You will come, won’t you?

Vicky : Of course, I will. Where are you celebrating it?

Sonali : At my home, of course.

Vicky : What time should I come?

Sonali : At 6 in the evening. You must come and bring your parents along.

Vicky : I will. Thanks, Sonali.

Sonali : Bye, Vicky. See you on my birthday.

Vicky : Bye. I’ll be there.

4. Imagine someone has invited your family to a programme and you were the only person at home when the invitation was given orally.

Write a note (4-5 lines) to pass on the message to the other people in your family. Or, Write an imaginary conversation in which you pass on the message to your parents.

Mummy : Is that so? Why did she call?
Sonali : It’s their 25th wedding anniversary on the 27th of November. She has invited all of us.
Mummy : Oh, how nice. Where are they celebrating it?
Sonali : At Plaza Banquet Hall.
Mummy : What time will it begin?
Sonali : At 8 p.m. Shall we be going?

Mummy : Oh, yes, we will. Mrs. Khan is one of my best friends. We will have to go.
