1. Why should we store water?
Ans: We should store the rainwater because:
(i) All the water we get comes from the rain. Living things use this water for their needs.
(ii) The rainy season lasts for three or four months. So if we do not store water, we cannot fulfill our needs.
(iii) Hence, we should store and save water, and it must be used economically.
2. What were the traditional ways of storing water in the house?
Ans:
(i) In the past, draw-wells were dug near houses to get drinking water.
(ii) The draw-wells used to have water all year.
(iii) People used to draw water from draw-wells by using a small pot (pohra) tied to a rope.
3. What is a dam built on?
Ans: A dam is built on a river.
4. What must we keep in mind while using water?
Ans: When we use water, we must keep in mind that water is a natural resource and that all living things need it.
5. What is water pollution?
Ans:
(i) A fall in the quality of water is known as water pollution.
(ii) Waste water from houses and factories gets mixed in rivers, lakes, etc. This results in water pollution.
(B) How can water be saved in places with water shortage? Suggest what can be done.
Ans: In places with water shortages, water can be saved by storing it in tanks, buckets, pots, and utensils and then using it carefully. Also, wells and reservoirs can be dug, and rainwater can be collected for later use.
(C) What good habits must we cultivate in order to use water economically?
Ans: We must inculcate the following good habits in order to use water economically:
(i) By not unnecessarily wasting water while brushing teeth or taking a bath.
(ii) By not wasting water while filling jars, buckets, tanks, etc.
(iii) By immediately notifying an elderly person of a leaking tap or bucket.
