(a) Shivaji Maharaj planned a campaign of the South.

Ans: Shivaji Maharaj planned a campaign in the South for the following reasons:

(i) To counter the threat from the attack of the Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb from the north. 

(ii) To create a powerful base in the south from where he could resist the blows of the Moghuls. 

(iii) To meet his stepbrother Vyankoji Raje of Tanjavur to resolve the dispute between them and persuade him to help him in the work of Swaraj.

 

(b) Shivaji Maharaj wrote to Vyankoji Raje and tried to persuade him to change his ways.
