2. Answer the following questions.
(1) What common qualities did the three brothers have?
Ans: All the three brothers were honest, kind and hard-working. They were all fond of their mother.
(2) What was the businessman looking for? Why?
Ans: The businessman was getting old. His daughter was of a marriageable age. and he was looking for a son-in-law who would be a good husband to his daughter as well as handle his business well.
(3) How did the middle brother use the rice?
Ans: The middle brother distributed the rice among the poor.
(4) Was it right for the youngest brother to ask for a share in the money? Why?
Ans: Yes, the youngest brother was right in asking for a share in the money. He had done a lot of work and had earned a profit from the original sack of rice. He was keeping back only a small part of this profit in return for the labour and money he had spent, and giving most of it to the friend.
3. Language Study (See pages 84-88.)
(1) Read the highlighted words.
All three of them were honest , kind and hardworking.
You are such an honest person.
The highlighted words are adjectives.
Now find at least five other adjectives from the lesson.

(2) List as many words as you can that will go with the given adjective. (At least 3 each)

4. Activities
(1) Imagine you are one of the three brothers. Write in short what you did with the rice.
Ans: When I realized that the sack of rice left with me might get spoiled. I decided to use it. Part of it I used as food for my family: we also made a number of things like ‘papads’ that could be stored for a long time. The rest I fed the hens and the little sparrows that flew down to my farm. The hens got nice and fat and laid wonderful eggs from which I made a good profit in the market. My family and I got a lot of pleasure from watching the little sparrows eat the rice and play around.
(2) Find any other story of three brothers or three sisters and rewrite it in your own words.
Ans: Students must do this on their own.
(3) Find out how rice is cultivated. Describe the process with the help of pictures or diagrams.
Ans: Students must do this on their own.
5. Group Work
Form a group of 4 or 5. Make a ‘storyboard’ for the story ‘Three Sacks of Rice’.
Arrange the story in the form of a sequence of pictures.
Decide what you will show in each picture; what words/lines you will write with each picture to explain what happens in it.
You can also add ‘speech balloons’ for the people in the pictures.
Ans: Students must do this on their own.
