Our National Flag
Our national flag consists of three different coloured bands. The topmost colour is saffron. The central part is white, with the Ashoka Chakra in navy blue on it. The lowermost colour is green. It is also called the ‘Tricolour’ or the ‘Tiranga’.
Each of the colours of the bands has a special meaning. Saffron stands for sacrifice. White stands for peace. Green stands for prosperity. The Ashoka Chakra has twenty-four spokes in it.
The national flag is hoisted on important buildings on national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day. When the flag is unfurled, everyone stands to attention. We also sing the national anthem and salute the flag.
The flag is a symbol of our unity, dignity, and integrity as a nation. It reflects our hopes and aspirations. We must always respect it. No sacrifice is too great to keep up its glory.
