The Rainy Season
India is mainly an agricultural country and the livelihood of millions of people depends on rainfall. In fact, a large part of the country’s economy is closely connected with the monsoon.
The rainy season in India usually begins in the first week of June and continues till the end of September. However, some regions in the eastern part of the country also receive rainfall during the winter months.
Before the rains arrive, the land becomes dry and dusty. In many parts of India, the summer season is extremely hot. Then the much-awaited rains finally come. The first showers bring joy to everyone. The dry soil, thirsty plants and animals seem to come alive again. Dust settles, trees look fresh and green and the surroundings become pleasant. Green grass covers open spaces, giving a soothing sight. Water collects in low-lying areas, forming puddles and small pools. Children happily splash in them, float paper boats, sing rain songs and enjoy the season.
Farmers prepare and plough their fields before the rains. After the first showers, they sow seeds and remain busy taking care of their crops throughout the season.
However, although rain is necessary, it can sometimes create problems. Heavy and continuous rainfall often disrupts daily life, especially in cities. Rivers may overflow and cause floods, damaging homes and crops. The rainy season can also lead to the spread of diseases, resulting in hardship for many people.
Even with these difficulties, life in our country would be impossible without rain.
