The Night Watchman

In today’s cities, you will hardly find a housing complex, office building, or shopping area without security guards keeping watch, especially at night. That is why the night watchman has become such a familiar figure. He is often called a chaukidar or pahrewala and usually wears a proper uniform.

Most night watchmen are middle-aged or elderly men, sometimes retired soldiers or ex-policemen. With their strong build, alertness and discipline, they put their skills to use in protecting homes, apartments and business places. Often with a thick moustache and a smart appearance, the night watchman looks confident and trustworthy. His main duty is to stay awake all night, keeping a close eye on the premises. From time to time, he patrols with his wooden stick, striking it on the ground. That sound brings peace of mind to the sleeping residents while warning thieves to stay away.

Usually, the watchman sits at the main gate or entrance on a small stool, or sometimes in a small cabin provided by the building. Many of them live far away from their families and return home only once a year for a short holiday, leaving a replacement in charge.

In India, Gurkhas and Pathans are often considered very reliable guards, especially for banks and big offices. In countries where crime is higher, night watchmen may work in pairs and sometimes even carry weapons for safety.

The watchman’s tall and sturdy presence itself gives people a sense of security. He is polite and respectful to the residents but firm and cautious with strangers. For criminals, his presence is enough to create fear. We must be grateful to this silent protector of society who makes our nights safer and our lives more peaceful.
