Our Family Doctor

Dr. Sharma, an MBBS, is our family doctor. His clinic is just a short walk from our house. We visit him regularly and we trust his treatment completely. Being a general practitioner, he usually treats us for common illnesses. But whenever there is a serious case, like when my grandfather had heart trouble, he immediately recommends a specialist. His advice is always reliable and we follow it without doubt.

The first time I went to his clinic was when I was in class 7. I was suffering from a bad cold and cough. Dr. Sharma greeted me warmly and even offered me a lozenge. His friendly manner made me feel comfortable and I wasn’t scared even when he gave me an injection. Earlier, I was always afraid of injections, but he helped me overcome that fear.

Many people think that a doctor’s life is full of comfort, with good income, a nice house and a car. But after knowing Dr. Sharma closely, I realized how hard a doctor’s life really is. Once, at about three in the morning, my grandfather had severe breathing trouble. My father immediately called Dr. Sharma and within half an hour, he was at our home. After examining my grandfather, he arranged an ambulance himself and even spoke to the heart specialist at Lake Hospital to take over the case. Such dedication moved me deeply.

Dr. Sharma charges very nominal fees, so even poor people can afford his treatment. He sits in his clinic twice a day and also works as a consultant in two hospitals in the town. Even during his rest hours or holidays, he is often called for emergencies. I am amazed at the knowledge he has. A doctor has to remember so many diseases and medicines and Dr. Sharma does it so well. His special gift is the ability to diagnose an illness with just a look or a touch. Because of this, patients often don’t need unnecessary tests, saving both time and money. Most people recover quickly under his care and many even consider him a god. His kindness is shown best when he treats poor patients without charging them.

Meeting him has inspired me deeply. I too wish to become a doctor one day and I would like to carry the same honesty, dedication and compassion that Dr. Sharma shows in his work.
