Any printed or digital matter whose main purpose is to provide news is called a newspaper. Today, our idea of a newspaper is not only that of folded sheets of paper but also online editions and mobile apps which bring updates instantly. Newspapers and news platforms are the eyes and ears of society. They form an essential part of modern life. For many people, the morning tea or coffee still feels incomplete without reading the newspaper or checking the news on their phone.
A newspaper performs many important functions. Its primary role is to inform readers about the latest events across the world. Along with this, it provides updates on science, technology, business, politics, education, health, sports, art and entertainment. It investigates issues and highlights facts that people should know.
Through editorials, newspapers guide and shape public opinion. The “Letters to the Editor” or digital comments section allow ordinary citizens to share their views. Newspapers also act as agents of social reform, educating people about their rights and duties. They serve as a bridge between the people and the government by raising questions, highlighting problems and suggesting solutions.
Modern newspapers also include features for entertainment; comic strips, advice columns, crosswords, puzzles, horoscopes, lifestyle pages and travel sections. They carry job advertisements, matrimonial notices, business promotions and public announcements. In fact, advertisements form a major source of income for newspapers, both in print and online.
A free press is one of the strongest pillars of democracy. Only when newspapers and media are free from political pressure can democracy truly flourish. A responsible press can expose corruption, demand accountability and bring justice to light. Many times, bold reporting has forced powerful leaders to resign or face the law. At the same time, newspapers must ensure truth and fairness, because their influence on public opinion is very strong.
Thus, newspapers whether printed or digital are not just sources of news but a vital part of democratic society.
