Sometimes we call a man a ‘gentleman’. But when asked why, or when we try to explain the exact meaning of the word, we often hesitate.

Who is a gentleman? A gentleman is, first of all, a gentle man. He is never rude or aggressive. He does not hurt others by his words, actions, expressions, or even silence, for silence too can sometimes wound. A true gentleman respects the feelings of others and believes that every individual has self-respect which must be protected.

This consideration for others is visible in his behaviour. Towards his superiors, he is respectful but never a flatterer. Towards his equals, he is courteous and towards those below him, he is kind and understanding.

The real test of a gentleman is in the way he treats people weaker or dependent on him. He does not raise his voice to prove authority, for he earns respect instead of demanding it. He never bullies the helpless, because he knows that such behaviour is cowardly. Rather, he supports and encourages them. He is chivalrous and willingly helps women, children, the elderly and the weak whenever they need him.

He is also open-minded and fair. Free from prejudices, he is honest and straightforward. He avoids gossip or speaking ill of others behind their back. Being a gentleman himself, he treats everyone else with the same dignity.

A gentleman is also a true sportsman. He plays fair, never seeks unfair advantage and disagrees without being mean. Success does not make him arrogant, nor does failure break his spirit. He remains cheerful and positive in all circumstances.

He is modest in behaviour and humble without pretending. He does not boast about himself, but when necessary, he speaks with confidence. He can be firm without being harsh and tactful without being cunning.

These may seem like many qualities, but they can all be found in a true gentleman. A gentleman is not just a man of manners, but a man of character.
