My Favourite Festival

Different parts of India celebrate different festivals throughout the year. However, Diwali is one festival that is celebrated in almost every part of the country. It is a festival of happiness and excitement and it is my favourite festival.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated during the month of Ashwin, usually in October or November. Many days before the festival begins, people clean and decorate their homes. Markets become bright and attractive with colourful decorations, lights, lanterns, flowers and festive displays.

The day after Diwali is celebrated as New Year’s Day in many places. People wake up early, take a special bath and wear new clothes. They seek the blessings of their elders and visit temples. They also meet relatives and friends to exchange greetings, sweets and gifts.

The last day of the festival is known as Bhau Beej or Bhai Duj. On this day, brothers visit their sisters, receive their blessings and present them with gifts.

Throughout the Diwali celebrations, children enjoy bursting crackers while many adults join in the fun with fireworks. Women make beautiful rangolis at the entrance of their homes and prepare delicious sweets and snacks. In the evening, rows of earthen lamps light up houses and streets. People from different communities happily take part in the celebrations.

Diwali is truly a joyful and memorable festival. I eagerly wait for it every year and always enjoy spending this special time with my family and friends.
