Is Television a Curse or a Blessing?
This is a question that is often asked, especially by parents of young children. They see their kids spending hours in front of the television, getting influenced by advertisements or distracted from studies and at such times they feel television is a curse. But the same parents call it a blessing when they enjoy a live cricket match, an informative documentary, or the latest news from around the world.
Just as every coin has two sides, every invention also has both good and bad, positive and negative. The value of any invention depends on how we use it. Even a mobile phone or a computer, which are powerful tools, can become harmful if misused. The same applies to television.
Let us first look at the negative side. In India, television is mainly used for entertainment, information and advertising. But many shows are not very useful and children often get influenced by violence, unhealthy lifestyles, or unrealistic content. Some people, especially those less aware, tend to believe whatever is shown on TV even if it is far from the truth.
Another drawback is addiction. People get so hooked to serials or reality shows that they skip social interactions and even dislike guests disturbing them during their favourite programme. Excessive TV viewing can also affect eyesight, reduce concentration and make children inactive. Instead of playing outdoors, many kids spend hours sitting on the couch watching cartoons or movies, becoming “couch potatoes.” Content filled with violence or unhealthy habits can also affect young minds negatively.
Now let us see the positive side. When used properly, television can be a great source of knowledge and awareness. Educational channels and science shows explain concepts in simple ways that reach millions at once, something even a classroom cannot do. News channels bring instant updates from across the globe. Farmers, students, professionals and artists can all learn new techniques and ideas through special programmes. Social awareness campaigns about health, cleanliness, environment, or digital safety influence people in a positive direction.
Thus, television, like any invention, is a tool. If used wisely, it is a blessing that informs, educates and entertains. But if misused, it turns into a curse. The choice is ours.
