An earthquake is a sudden and powerful shaking of the earth’s surface that can sometimes cause widespread destruction. It occurs due to movements and shifts deep inside the earth. Like floods, cyclones and droughts, earthquakes are among the most serious natural disasters. Some earthquakes are so mild that people hardly notice them, while others create fear, confusion and panic among large numbers of people.

Certain earthquakes can be extremely destructive. In the past, a major earthquake in western India caused immense suffering and damage. The earthquake that struck Gujarat in 2001 resulted in a huge loss of life and property. More recently, powerful undersea earthquakes have triggered giant tidal waves, known as tsunamis, affecting several coastal regions and causing devastation in many countries.

Earthquakes can also bring about major changes in the landscape. In some cases, parts of the land may sink, while new landforms may emerge. Undersea earthquakes have even led to the disappearance of some islands and the formation of new ones.

Human beings are largely powerless against the tremendous force of earthquakes. Although earthquake-resistant buildings can reduce damage, they cannot provide complete protection. Modern science helps us study seismic activity and sometimes gives early warnings, allowing people to prepare and reduce losses. However, despite remarkable advances in science and technology, earthquakes cannot be prevented. For this reason, people will continue to learn how to live with this powerful force of nature for many years to come.
