A Day of Heavy Rain

It was the rainy season. The fields and open spaces were covered with fresh green grass. The whole countryside looked like a beautiful green carpet spread across the earth.

One morning in July, I woke up early. When I looked outside, the sun was shining brightly. It seemed impossible that it would rain that day. So, I left for school without carrying an umbrella or wearing a raincoat. However, in the afternoon, dark clouds suddenly appeared in the sky. While I was returning home from school, it began to rain heavily. Within a short time, the sky became dark and gloomy. I stood under a roadside shelter for a while. But I did not want to stay there for too long because I knew my parents would be worried.

Many other students were also waiting there. Soon, the roads were flooded with knee-deep water. Finding a safe path home became difficult. We were soaked from head to toe. The area looked like a huge lake. Fallen trees blocked several roads and brought traffic to a standstill. Cars, buses and rickshaws were stranded in many places. After a tiring struggle and several anxious moments, I finally reached home. My parents felt greatly relieved to see me safe.

The rain continued throughout the night and lasted until the following evening. Slowly, the floodwater began to drain away. Even so, it took more than a week for the town to return to normal after the effects of the heavy rain.
